Is it possible that Jesus had a speech impediment?
So I was reading through some of Matthew 7 last week and noticed something that caught my attention.
Now I know
there’s a lot involved in this verse, and I may be focusing on the “wrong”
thing, but why did Matthew record Jesus as saying “Lord, Lord?
Did Jesus
have a speech impediment? No. The Hebrew language does not have bold or italics
or underlining, so the only way they had of emphasizing certain words was
through repetition. So here, Matthew records that Jesus simply emphasized the
word ‘Lord’. We might write it "Not everyone who says to me,
'Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven…”
Now check out Isaiah 6:1-3!
In
the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and
exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphs,
each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they
covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one
another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full
of his glory."
So the angels weren’t literally saying “Holy, Holy, Holy” … they are just saying Holy so loud and with so much emphasis that Isaiah writes it three times! This is the highest level of emphasis in the Hebrew language!
How cool is
that!? I studied this further, and found this awesome observation by theologian
RC Sproul concerning this passage:
“So the
angels are not content with, “Holy!” And they are not even content with the
emphasis of, “Holy! Holy!” They must say it three times—“Holy! Holy! Holy!”They take it to the third degree—the
unmatched degree. No other
attribute of God is praised like this. Not love or mercy or justice or
sovereignty. Just Holy.”
God is worthy of our
worship above all else because he is HOLY! I wonder … does your life and
worship emphasize God’s holiness?
